A bright, glaring kitchen or bathroom light at 10 pm is one of the quickest ways to snap you out of wind-down mode and disrupt your evening relaxation. Circadian smart lighting helps you avoid this by allowing you to gently shift your home’s lighting from energising, cool daytime brightness to a softer, warmer evening glow that feels calm and comfortable. For example, in the kitchen, you might use bright, cool white light for cooking and cleaning during the day, then automatically dim and warm the lights as night falls to create a cosy atmosphere for late-night snacks or conversations.

Room-by-room plan for better evenings
Kitchen: from task lighting to gentle unwind
The kitchen often needs bright, focused light for chopping and cooking. In the early evening you might use cool or neutral white (3000K to 3500K) at a higher level to see clearly and avoid accidents.

Bedrooms benefit from quiet, reassuring light in the hour before sleep. Ceiling lights are usually too bright and harsh in the late evening, even when dimmed. Instead, use bedside lamps or integrated headboard lighting at a warm setting.
Pre-sleep pathway lighting is especially helpful. Low-level lighting under the bed, under wardrobes, or in the skirting can come on very dimly when you enter the room. This lets you move around without being blasted by the main light or waking a partner.
Hallways and stairs: safe but gentle night lighting
Hallways and stairs should feel safe to move through, but you do not need full brightness at night. Low-level night lights built into the wall, step lights on stairs, or very dim overheads on a sensor work well.
Set these to a very warm colour and minimal brightness. Motion sensors can bring lights up just enough when someone walks by, then fade them back down. This is especially useful for families getting up at night, as it avoids harsh light jolting everyone awake.
Bathrooms: practical night mode
