Fuse box upgrade: the questions worth asking before you agree
Before you agree to a fuse box upgrade, make sure you understand what is being changed, checked and tested in your home.
Agreeing to a fuse box upgrade can feel like a big step, especially if you’re unsure what the work involves or how it will benefit your home. Having some basic knowledge helps you ask the right questions, understand the safety improvements, and compare quotes based on quality and value—not just price. This way, you can feel confident that the upgrade will make your home safer, protect your family, and meet current electrical standards.
Clues your current fuse box is past its best
Not every older consumer unit needs replacing straight away, but there are some clear warning signs that it is time to consider an upgrade. Looking for these clues before speaking to an electrician will help you have a more informed conversation.
If you can safely access your fuse box, look for:
No RCD protection: no “test” buttons and only simple switches or fuses
Rewireable fuses: ceramic or brown carriers with fuse wire instead of modern breakers
Signs of heat: scorching, discolouration, a melted smell, or brittle plastic
No spare ways: every space used, making future additions awkward or messy
Old materials: a wooden backboard or exposed live parts when the cover is removed
Any of these points is a cue to ask an electrician for a proper inspection. Burn marks, buzzing or a warm casing are especially urgent and should not be ignored.
What a good modern consumer unit includes
A well-specified fuse box today is about safety, clarity and future flexibility. You are not just replacing a box, you are upgrading the overall protection for your home and anyone who lives there.
Most modern installations will include individual RCBOs, which combine the functions of an RCD and an MCB in one device. This usually means that if there is a fault on one circuit, only that circuit switches off rather than half the house.
Your electrician may also discuss surge protection devices. These are designed to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes, and are now common in many new consumer units, especially where there is expensive technology, home offices or electric vehicle charging.
Good labelling is just as important. Every circuit should be clearly marked, in plain language, so you can quickly see which breaker controls sockets, lights, kitchen appliances, showers and so on. A tidy layout and secure, non-brittle casing complete the picture.
How an upgrade interacts with older wiring
A new fuse box does not magically fix tired or damaged wiring. In many homes, the consumer unit is brought up to modern standards while existing circuits remain in place, as long as they test as safe and suitable.
In an older property, the electrician should test the insulation resistance, continuity and earth fault loop readings of each circuit. If some wiring is very old, uses rubber or cloth insulation, or is missing an earth, you may be advised that parts of the system need remedial work or full rewiring.
It is normal for certain defects to show up only once modern protective devices like RCDs and RCBOs are installed, as they are more sensitive than old fuses. You should ask your electrician in advance how they will handle any faults that appear during testing and how they will explain your options.
Checks your electrician should carry out before upgrading
Before agreeing to any consumer unit change, ask what checks will be done first. A careful electrician will assess the wider installation, not just swap the box on the wall.
They should look at the main earthing and bonding, making sure your gas and water pipes are correctly bonded and the earth connection to the supply is sound. This is fundamental to the safe operation of RCDs and RCBOs.
The main tails, which are the cables feeding the consumer unit, should be checked for size, condition and suitability for the expected load. The existing circuits need inspecting for obvious damage and then tested properly to confirm that they are safe to reconnect to a new board.
A basic load assessment is also useful, especially in homes with electric showers, cookers, immersion heaters or EV chargers. Ask your electrician to explain whether your current and likely future demand is suitable for the proposed arrangement.
Essential paperwork and testing you should receive
Any consumer unit replacement should be accompanied by proper testing and documentation. This is not just bureaucracy; it is your evidence that the work has been carried out to a recognised standard.
You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate detailing the circuits affected, the tests performed and the results. Test sheets will include readings for insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD trip times and more, usually laid out in tabular form.
In England and Wales, most fuse box upgrades in domestic properties are notifiable under Building Regulations. For notifiable work, you should later receive either a Building Control completion certificate or a certificate from a Part P registered scheme showing that the work has been notified. Your electrician should also provide updated circuit schedules and any user instructions relevant to your new devices.
Questions to ask before you agree
Having a short checklist of questions makes it easier to compare different electricians and understand their approach. You are trying to get a sense of how thorough and safety-focused they are.

Typical scenarios in common local homes
Victorian terraces
Victorian terraces often have a mix of periods of work, with some circuits modern and others much older. Space near the front door or in the cellar can be tight, and fuse boxes are sometimes mounted on old timber boards.
An upgrade here may involve relocating the consumer unit to a safer height and position, replacing or fire protecting the backboard, and picking up on any older, unearthed wiring that is no longer suitable. Expect a careful discussion about which circuits are safe to keep and which may need rewiring.
1930s semis
Many 1930s semis have had their wiring updated once or twice already, with additional circuits for loft conversions, conservatories or garages. The main constraint is often the capacity and layout of the existing board.
A new consumer unit can rationalise multiple add-ons, bringing everything into one clearly labelled enclosure with spare ways for plans. Your electrician will also pay close attention to the bonding of older metal pipework that may still be present.
Newer flats
More modern flats, especially those with electric heating, can have a higher electrical load in a compact space. The consumer unit is usually in a hallway cupboard, sometimes alongside meters and comms equipment.
Here, neat cable management, appropriate fire-rated enclosures and coordinated surge protection are important. Your electrician may also need to liaise with the building management or freeholder regarding access and any building rules for electrical changes.
